AIBE XXII Syllabus 2026: Subject-Wise Question Count, Paper Format and Passing Marks
Share this article:

A hundred questions. Three hours and thirty minutes. One mark each, with no deduction for a wrong answer. That is the whole shape of the AIBE XXII paper, and it will be held on November 29, 2026.

The syllabus behind it covers 19 subjects. The Bar Council of India (BCI) specifies this syllabus on its official website. It tells you which subjects are tested, how many questions each one gets, and how the 100 marks are spread.

AIBE stands for All India Bar Examination. It is the licensing exam for aspiring lawyers in India. Clear it, and you can obtain the Certificate of Practice (CoP). Without a CoP, a candidate cannot practise law in India.

This guide covers the subject-wise question count, the paper format, passing marks and the books the source page recommends. If you are also preparing for judiciary exams, the subject table below is a handy checklist to see where your existing preparation already overlaps.

Seven subjects carry 62 of the 100 questions

Constitutional Law, Cr. P. C. with the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, and C. P. C. get 10 questions each. The IPC with the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the Evidence Act with the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam, Family Law, and the group covering Law of Contract, Specific Relief, Property Laws and the Negotiable Instrument Act get 8 each. Add these up and you reach 62 questions.

A candidate who is strong in these seven areas has already covered most of the paper. Treat them as your base. A Mock Test that follows this spread will show quickly whether your study time matches the marks on offer.

Older laws and their newer counterparts sit on the same line

Three entries in the table name an older law and a newer one together: IPC and (New) Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Cr. P. C. and (New) Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, and Evidence Act and (New) Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam. Together they hold 26 questions.

So study both sets. Reading only one risks losing marks on a question framed around the other. When you revise, keep a short note that places the old and the new side by side. Good Judiciary Notes do exactly this.

The twelve smaller subjects still decide results

Law of Tort, including Motor Vehicle Act and Consumer Protection Law, has 5 questions. Five subjects carry 4 each: Alternative Dispute Redressal including Arbitration Act, Public Interest Litigation, Professional Ethics, Labour and Industrial Law, and Law related to Taxation. Administration Law has 3. Company Law, Environmental Law, Cyber Law, Land Acquisition Act and Intellectual Property Laws have 2 each.

These 12 subjects add up to 38 questions. That is a big share when the pass mark is 45 for General and OBC candidates. Skipping them entirely is a risk, even if each one looks small.

Do the sum on time. You get 210 minutes for 100 questions, which is about 2.1 minutes per question. That is enough to read each option with care, so there is no need to rush through the paper.

BCI does not deduct marks for incorrect answers or for unanswered questions. Since a wrong answer costs nothing, the source advises attempting as many questions as possible to improve your chances of a good score. Check the official notification for any updates to the pattern.

SC / ST / PwD

There is one detail worth remembering. If BCI removes any question after objections are raised against the answer key, the minimum marks will change. The pass percentage will not. So think in percentages, not in a fixed number of correct answers.

How candidates fared in earlier attempts

As per the AIBE 20 statistics on the source page, 77,582 candidates failed out of 1,74,386 who appeared. That is about 44.5 percent of the candidates.

The same page lists headlines for AIBE XXI, which report that 1,15,805 candidates qualified and that 65.92 percent qualified for the CoP. These figures come from different exams, so read them as a sense of scale and not as a direct comparison.

Who can sit the exam, and how many times

Candidates with a 3-year LLB or a five-year integrated LLB degree from an institute recognised by the BCI can apply. Final-year law students are also eligible.

There is no cap on attempts. A candidate can appear as many times as needed to qualify. Anyone who fails must reappear to get the Certificate of Practice.

Books the source page recommends

The page lists these books for AIBE 22 preparation. It also says candidates should check that the books they choose cover the AIBE 22 syllabus.

Books are only half the work. The source advises regular practice with previous years’ question papers and mock tests, because they show the type of topics covered, the type of questions asked and the difficulty level. The page lists AIBE 20 and AIBE 21 question papers, and sample papers and mock tests for AIBE XXII, all with detailed solutions. Solving these PYQ sets under timed conditions is a fair way to measure how ready you are.
