UP PCS-J 2026 Prelims: Pattern, Syllabus and How to Divide Your Preparation

Date Published

The fresh UP PCS-J 2026 notification is awaited, and the dates are yet to be announced. That is the best time to start, because the syllabus is wide and the Mains needs steady answer-writing practice.

This blog sets out the stages, the Prelims pattern and the Prelims syllabus of the UP PCS-J exam, and then shows how to divide your time. This blog does not give a numerical subject-wise weightage of past papers. Instead, it uses the marks distribution of the papers themselves to plan your preparation. Confirm every detail against the UPPSC notification when it is out, since the notification decides vacancies, dates, eligibility and conditions.

The three stages

·        Preliminary Examination: objective, multiple choice questions.

·        Main Written Examination: descriptive.

·        Interview: 100 marks.

Interview marks are added to the written marks for final ranking.

Prelims pattern

Paper

Subject

Marks

Duration

Paper I

General Knowledge

150

2 hours

Paper II

Law

300

2 hours

Total

450

4 hours

Both papers are objective, and negative marking applies. The number of questions, the marks per question and the amount deducted are not confirmed yet, so check the notification for these.

Look at the split. Law carries two-thirds of the Prelims marks. A candidate who is strong in law and average in general knowledge is better placed than the reverse.

What the Prelims syllabus covers

Paper I: General Knowledge (150 marks)

The topics include History of India, Indian Culture, Geography of India and Indian Polity. They also include current national issues, topics of social relevance, India and the World, the Indian economy, international affairs and institutions, and science and technology with communications and space. It also lists legal current affairs, recent legislation and important judgments.

The social relevance laws listed include the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016, the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007, the Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961, the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005, the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace Act, 2013, the PC&PNDT Act, 1994, the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act, 1971 and the POCSO Act, 2012.

Paper II: Law (300 marks)

·        Jurisprudence

·        International Organisations

·        Current International Affairs

·        Indian Constitution

·        Transfer of Property Act

·        Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam, 2023

·        Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023

·        Civil Procedure Code

·        Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023

·        Contract Act

How to divide your preparation

Since Law carries 300 of 450 marks, give it the largest share of your time. A reasonable split, for planning only, is about two-thirds of your study hours on Paper II subjects and one-third on general knowledge and current affairs. Adjust it according to your strengths.

Within law, begin with the three new criminal laws: the BNS, BNSS and BSA. They are in the syllabus and in the Mains too, so the effort pays twice. Add the Constitution, the Civil Procedure Code, the Transfer of Property Act and the Contract Act. Keep jurisprudence and international organisations for steady revision, as they are short but easy to lose marks on.

In general knowledge, do not try to cover everything. Cover the listed topics, keep a running file of legal current affairs, and read the important judgments of the last year.

Do not ignore the Mains while preparing for Prelims

The Mains pattern is large, and overlap with Prelims is high. For planning, here are the papers:

Paper

Subject

Marks

I

General Knowledge

200

II

English Language (essay, précis, translation)

100

III

Hindi Language (essay, précis, translation)

100

IV

Law I: Substantive Law

200

V

Law II: Procedure and Evidence

200

VI

Law III: BNS, Revenue and Local Laws

200

Total

Written Mains

1000

Law III includes the U.P. Revenue Code, 2006 and several state local laws, with penal law carrying 50 marks and revenue plus local laws carrying 150 marks. Many aspirants leave these to the end. Since they can change your rank, begin reading them early.

A simple monthly plan until the notification

·        Month one: Finish the BNS, BNSS and BSA with Bare Act reading and short notes.

·        Month two: Constitution and Civil Procedure Code, with PYQ practice for both.

·        Month three: Transfer of Property Act and Contract Act, plus jurisprudence.

·        Throughout: Weekly current affairs, one set of MCQs every day, and one Mains answer every day.

Use previous year papers to learn the style of questions, the repeated topics and the depth expected. Keep an error notebook where you write every mistake and the rule that corrects it.

Start your Civil Judge Exam Preparation with a focused strategy, comprehensive Bare Act study, regular mock tests, and previous year question practice. Build strong legal concepts, improve answer-writing skills, and prepare confidently for the Judiciary Examination.

Practise the Prelims with the negative marking in mind. Learn when to leave a question and when to attempt it, since wild guessing loses marks.
