IOCL Law Officer Recruitment 2026: Vacancy, Eligibility, Salary and Application Process

Date Published

Do you have two years of legal experience and an LLB sitting somewhere between litigation work and a corporate desk job? Indian Oil Corporation Limited just opened a route that pays that experience off directly.

On 14th August 2026, IOCL released Advertisement No. IOCL/CO-HR/RECTT/2026/01, covering 470 executive vacancies across five disciplines. Ten of those seats are for Law Officer, Grade A. Applications opened the same day and close on 3rd September 2026 at 5:00 PM.

This is a Maharatna oil company hiring into its legal function, and the eligibility bar is set slightly higher than most fresher PSU law posts. Here is everything the notification actually says about who qualifies, what the exam covers, and how the process runs.

The Recruitment at a Glance

IOCL is hiring for Graduate Engineer, Officer (Marketing), Law Officer, Assistant Quality Control Officer and Diploma Engineer, all through one Computer Based Test followed by further stages depending on the post. Law Officer sits in Grade A alongside Graduate Engineer and Officer (Marketing), which tells you where IOCL places this role in its internal hierarchy.

Law Officer Vacancy: Category-Wise Split

Of the 411 Grade A posts advertised across all disciplines, Law accounts for 10. That is a small slice, but Law Officer is one of only nine disciplines competing within Grade A rather than the much larger engineering pool, which keeps the applicant field narrower than it first appears.

Reservation for OBC (NCL), SC, ST, EWS and PwBD candidates follows standard Government of India directives, and PwBD seats are further reserved horizontally within these totals.

Eligibility: Degree, Marks and the Experience Clause

IOCL's Law Officer eligibility has three separate conditions, and missing any one of them disqualifies an otherwise strong application.

Educational Qualification

You need a graduate degree in any discipline plus an LLB, or a 5 year Integrated LLB, from a university recognised by the Bar Council of India. General, EWS and OBC (NCL) candidates need 60 percent marks in each qualifying degree; SC, ST and PwBD candidates need 55 percent.

The Work Experience Requirement

This is where IOCL's Law Officer post differs sharply from many entry-level PSU legal roles. It asks for a minimum of 2 years of post-qualification work experience, reckoned as on 30th June 2026, in litigation, law firms, or legal functions within private or public organisations or government bodies. The experience must be specifically in areas like litigation, arbitration or ADR, or the drafting and vetting of legal and contractual documents.

If you are studying for CLAT PG or another postgraduate law entrance while already working in a law firm or a legal department, this experience clause works in your favour rather than against you. It is worth keeping your experience letters and organisational proof ready well before the application closes, since document verification will ask for this on official letterhead.

Additional Common Conditions

•      Final degree or marksheet must be in hand by 30th September 2026

•      Qualifications from part-time, correspondence, distance or online modes are not accepted

•      CGPA or grade-based results must be converted to percentage using your institute's official formula

•      Candidates with independent legal practice need their Bar Council of India registration certificate ready for verification

Age Limit

The maximum age for Law Officer, Grade A is 30 years, reckoned as on 1st July 2026. That is higher than the 26 to 28 year cap set for the engineering and marketing posts in the same notification, which reflects the experience requirement built into this particular role.

Relaxation follows the usual structure: 3 years for OBC (NCL), 5 years for SC or ST, and an additional 10 years for PwBD candidates over the applicable category limit. Ex-servicemen relaxation follows extant Government of India guidelines.

Pay Scale and Service Bond

Law Officer falls under Grade A along with Graduate Engineer and Officer (Marketing), carrying an initial basic pay of Rs 50,000 on a scale of Rs 50,000 to Rs 1,60,000, with an approximate annual CTC of Rs 18.4 lakh. On top of basic pay, selected candidates get Dearness Allowance, HRA or subsidised housing, medical benefits, gratuity, contributory provident fund, group personal accident insurance, LTC, a superannuation benefit fund, conveyance advance and Performance Related Pay.

Selected candidates do carry a service bond. Grade A candidates from the general category must serve a bond backed by Rs 3,00,000, while EWS, OBC (NCL), SC, ST and PwBD candidates carry a reduced bond of Rs 50,000. The bond period runs a minimum of 3 years from the date of joining, so factor that commitment into your decision before you accept an offer.

How the Selection Process Is Structured

Selection for Law Officer, like every other post in this notification, runs through three stages: a Computer Based Test, a Group Discussion and Group Task, and a Personal Interview. Unlike the AAI recruitment which drops the interview for junior posts, IOCL keeps all three stages for every executive role including entry-level Law Officer, since the post itself already assumes 2 years of prior experience.

Group Discussion and Group Task

Personal Interview

Each component carries its own qualifying threshold. General, EWS and OBC (NCL) candidates need 45 percent overall in the CBT with 40 percent in each section; SC and ST candidates need 40 percent overall with 35 percent per section; PwBD candidates need 30 percent overall with 25 percent per section. The GD or GT and the interview each need a separate 40 percent pass mark regardless of category.

CBT Structure: 100 Questions, Negative Marking Included

Unlike the AAI Law Officer exam, IOCL's CBT does carry negative marking, at 0.25 marks deducted per wrong answer. That single difference changes how you should approach guesswork here compared to a no-penalty paper. Section order is fixed, with General Aptitude first and Domain Knowledge second.

For Law Officer candidates, Section B draws entirely on legal domain knowledge, though the exact subject-wise split within that section is not detailed in the sources reviewed for this piece. Given the experience clause tied to litigation, arbitration and contract drafting, expect the paper to test practical legal application rather than pure theory, and prepare Contract Law and Arbitration and Conciliation with particular care.

What This Notification Signals for Law Officer Aspirants

IOCL's Law Officer post is not a fresher entry point the way AAI's Junior Executive (Law) is. It rewards candidates who already have 2 years of practical legal exposure, and it pays for that experience with a higher pay band and a higher age ceiling. If you are midway through a litigation practice or working in a corporate legal team while also preparing for CLAT PG or another postgraduate law route, this notification fits directly into that timeline rather than competing with it.

The negative marking on this CBT also means your preparation strategy here should differ from a no-penalty exam like AAI's. Build accuracy first, and reserve guesswork for questions where you can eliminate at least two options with confidence.
